Miss Karafuto represents the colony of the southern part of Sakhalin Island and is by the artist Iwamura Shōkensai. Her personal name is Karafuto Hanako and her kimono crest is the edo nadeshiko (large frilled chrysanthemum).

Miss Karafuto was placed at the Delaware Historical Society in 1928 through the dedicated efforts of Emalea Pusey Warner (1853-1948), a prominent educator, social reformer, and leader in the Women's Movement in Delaware.

While she retains most of her original accessories, she is missing her ship ticket and passport, along with her parasol.

Through archival photographs, she has been identified as the original Miss Nagano and the Delaware Historical Society is now referring to her officially as “Miss Nagano” instead of Miss Karafuto.
