Miss Gifu is by the artist Takizawa Kōryūsai II. Her kimono crest is the iori mokko (papaya within a house).
Miss Gifu was initially placed in the Cuyahoga County Public Library in Cleveland, Ohio in May of 1930 through the auspices of the Cleveland Presbyterian Society and was shared frequently with the Toledo Museum of Art.
In 1942, Miss Gifu was moved to the Cleveland Museum of Art where she became a part of their art extension/education program and was used in school and educational exhibits in the 1950s and 1960s. She was transferred to the museum’s new facilities in 1972 where attention to her subsequently lapsed.
Interest in her revived again in 1997 following requests from interested parties in Japan. Miss Gifu then returned to Japan for conservation and a homecoming ceremony.
Today, she remains in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. She retains a nearly complete set of accessories, missing only her ship ticket and passport, and original display stand.
Through archival image comparisons, she has been determined to be the original Miss Fukui.
